The Main FOUR Types of Loft Insulation

Their are 4 basic types of insulation that can be used to insulate your loft or roof space. Here is a quick overview of each one.

Matting Insulation

This is often called blanket or quilt insulation and comes in flexible rolls of different thicknesses. The most common type of Matting Insulation is mineral wool made from glass or rock fibre. Most empty lofts will be fitted with this as standard. It’s very versatile and can also be used to insulate other parts of the building such as stud walls and underneath suspended timber floors. Protective clothing such as gloves and masks should be worn when fitting this type of insulation. Sheep’s wool is also a good alternative as matting insulation.

Loose-Fill Insulation

Losse Fill Material comes in solid bags and can be made of various materials including granules, cork, mineral wool, cellulose fibre and vermiculite. It is an incredibly flexible material to work with. It can literally be poured between the wooden joists and can easily fit into awkward nooks and crannies. If you have a loft that might be challenging to insulate then this might be your best solution.

Blown Insulation

This should only ever be installed by professionals as it requires specialist equipment to install. It is literally blown into certain areas of the loft with the equipment. It is installed in small sections at a time until the relevant depth is acheived. It is a loose material and might remain that way if used in loft insulation but it can also bond to another surface or indeed bond to itself if needed for insulating vertical spaces.

Rigid Board Insulation

An easy one to imagine for sure. Think of a rigid board made from insulation material and you have Rigid Board Insulation.. This is very versatile and can be used to insulate lofts and floors and walls. The only downside is that it often has to be cut to a particular shape and size so it’s often best to ensure a skilled tradesman or insulation professional undertakes the task. It is mostly made from foamed plastic using materials such as polystyrene, polyurethane or polyisocyanurate. The last two are certainly contenders for the accolade of ‘the best insulation’.

How Much Insulation is Required

It depends, however for the most part if you adopt the attitude of ‘the thicker the better’ then it will perform better and save you more money on your heating bills.
Some materials may not need to be installed at the same thickness as others as they simply have much better performance so less is required and you’ll still get all the same performance benefits.

Manufacturers will likely quote the thermal properties of their insulation products. The manufacturer will provide you with the thermal conductivity of the insulation in question. This is also known as the K-value or lambda. If a particular type of insulation has a ‘low value’ then this means that the insulation is very good at it’s job and you will likely be able to use less or thinner layers.

Here at Go Insulation we wouldn’t expect you to have to figure all this out. It can be confusing for some. Instead, you can sit back and relax and let our expert team here at Go Insulation do all the ‘figuring out’ for you, so you don’t have too.

What about Loft Hatches, Pipes, Pipework & Water Tanks?

Pipers and Water Tanks

Having your loft insulated is a great thing to have done to your home. It will help you reduce your heating costs and will keep your home warm and cozy. The thing is, once you insulate your loft with Go Insulation it will then start to get cold in the loft. Prior to you having insulation it would likely have been quite warm.

Your pipes and water tanks are now going to be more exposed to this change in temperature and they may even freeze when it gets really cold so you are going to need to consider insulating them too. It can be a simple job for a competent DIY-er however if you are unsure then always seek professional help.

Loft Hatches

The loft hatch can often be responsible for cold draughts and cold air leaking back in to your home. Especially once your loft becomes adequatley insulated by Go Insulation. It is really simple and easy to avoid this and all you need is an insulated loft hatch and a couple of strips of draught-excluding material around the frame.

Frequently Asked Questions on Cavity Wall Insulation…

…Answered for YOU by Go Insulation

We have compiled a short list of the most frequently asked questions from our customers that we receive here at Go Insulation regarding Loft Insulation.

What thickness is recommended for lost insulation in my home?

270mm of loft insulation is required as the minimum standard according to current ECC program regulations.

My loft is already insulated but I am unsure if it is adequate, will this need to be removed or will you add more on top of it?

Go Insulation will simply top-it-up for you to at least the required minimum depth. Your current insulation can remain in place as it will still work well at insulating your home.

I tend to use my loft for storing things, can I still insulate my loft and still store things?

When your loft is insulated by Go Insulation to the 270mm minimum level it is likely that your joists will not be visible and this could prove to be a potential hazard within the your loft. However, dont worry as all is not lost. You can still store things in your loft by having a joiner fit some floor boarding so that a storage area can still be acheived. It’s a simple job.

I can see electrical cables in my loft. Will these cause a problem?

Your Go Insulation installer will advise you on this and it’s no big deal.
Electrical cables will not cause a problem. The only cable that tends to be in a loft that may need to be consdiered is one that serves an electrical shower. Your Go Insulation installer will identify this and ensure it is not covered and is kept safe giving you that all important piece of mind.

My loft is quite small and it’s not possible to stand up in. Will you still be able to insulate it?

It’s not uncommon for a loft to be too small to stand up in. However our Go Insulation intsallation team are very used to this so it will not be a problem.
